Things to do in Negombo

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much to everyone who has advised us on hotels, restaurants, bars, tour guides, tours, etc. etc. TA has been fantastic and everyone has been really helpful!

There is, however, one last question I have. We have now arranged our 3 day tour to see as many sights as we can, but I wonder if anyone can advise of things to do in and around Negombo which do not involve travel! Is there any nice walks, cycling, kite surfing, boat trips, diving etc. to do in /near Negombo?

Any advice would be very much appreciated because I think my partner will go crazy if I make him sit by a pool sunbathing for the remaining 7 days of our trip!!

Many thanks in advance,

Kaz x

Things to do in Negombo

Hi Kaz

Something you might like to consider if you%26#39;re planning on exploring the Negombo area for a day or two, is to use one of the official REGISTERED tuk-tuks (the registered drivers have a sticker in the front of their vehicle and wear white shirts). There were 4 in our party when we did it on one of our earlier Sri Lankan trips and we hired 2 of them. They spoke brilliant English, were safe drivers and it was much cheaper and much more fun to buzz around in the tuk-tuks for our Negombo touring. We paid Rs2000 to them in total for a 3 hour tour (about £10) and were taken to all sorts of places. Firstly, to an amazing Hindu temple where an elaborate ceremony was taking place. Our guides were able to explain it all, reassure us as to where to go which is really helpful in temples - you%26#39;re never sure what is okay - ie what you%26#39;re wearing, whether you can take photos etc. I wouldn%26#39;t have dared go in without our ';minders';, but it was a fantastic experience. They then took us to the enormous fish market, took us around and explained everything, before continuing to the lagoon with hundreds of fishing boats - a really beautiful place. They also stopped whenever there was something interesting to see, such as a line of prisoners in chains, being marched into the prison! Really fascinating stuff! We didn%26#39;t expect to find Negombo so interesting, but for a day or two at the beginning and end of a 2 week stay, it was great.

We also took another tuk-tuk on a separate occasion to the lovely old Buddhist temple ... name is Angurukaramulla ... also within a mile or so of Negombo town. Definitely worth a visit.

Join the local kids for a game of cricket on the beach and walk along it to see the local fishermen bringing in their catches and mending their nets. Lots of activity and colour. Certainly no need to sit by the pool sunbathing. I didn%26#39;t!

Hope this helps
