thanks for the replys. i can see from the reviews from the mermaid bentota seems to have more in the way of night life than kalutara. is this easy to get to and from at night. does anyone have any recomendations of local bars and restaurants to visit for a break from the hotel.

There are several hotels around the Kalutara area, one you have mentioned of course, all will need a cab to get to them at night unless staying at Royal Palms and Tangerine, as they are next door to each other, not advisable to walk along the beach after dark !
Not that much in way of entertainment really, this is common with nearly all hotels away from Colombo, sure there will some low key stuff in most hotels, but not what you may expect in the Costa%26#39;s for instance !
In Kalutara town itself, entertainment at night?, well erm, nowt really.
