Hi Ian,

No direct trains from Gampaha to Negombo. You will have to change at Ragama.

You can check train timetables here (not sure it%26#39;s the complete timetables:

http://www.railway.gov.lk/

Negombo is 22-23 km from Gampaha. I%26#39;m pretty sure a bus is plying the route. If no direct buses, go via Ja-ela.

Thanks for this information.

I understand Ja ela is very close to the reserve entrance at Muthurajawela (1km)

In this regard, please do you know if you dont mind, best way to travel to Ja Ela from Gampaha eg is there a bus or is there a train.

Yours with thanks

Ian

ps please do you know the length of the journey appox (in time) i. by train ii. by bus

Dear Forum members

Thanks again

Please does anyone know where Ragama is in relation to Colombo and Gampaha

Best wishes

Ian

Ragama is between Gampaha and Colombo, about 12 km from Gampaha.

Ja-ela is about 14 km from Gampaha. Local buses in Lanka are not fast and stop everywhere, so 30-45 minutes.

Hans

Dear Hans %26amp;amp; others

35 to 45 mins isnt too bad.

Please - would I be correct in saying Ragama is near Ja Ela it sounds like they might be.

Please do you know if the buses run on Saturdays and Sundays also do they run from early in the morning

Thank you again

Ian

Ian,

Ragama is 6-7 km from Ja Ela. Ragama is somewhat south of a straight line from Gampaha to Ja Ela.

Buses in Lanka run on Saturdays and Sundays and also early in the morning. Maybe fewer buses over the weekend, but in Lanka not much difference between weekends and weekdays.

Hans

Hi Ian,

More or less. It%26#39;s a triangle Gampaha-Ragama-Negombo/Ja-Ela. The train from Ja-Ela reaches Colombo through Ragama, hence Hans%26#39; advice for a train transfer if you really wanted it that way.

Generally local buses run 7 days per week in Lanka, but on Sat and Sunday the frequency tends to be lower - esp. before 8 AM. After all buses generally only leave the departing bus station when at least half full and filling up simply takes longer during quiet hours!

All the best,

%26lt;Erik%26gt; %26amp; [Sandya]

Dear Erik/Sandya and Hans

Well thank you so much for this. It seems from Gampaha it wont be too difficult for me to get to Ja Ela (and hence Muthurjawela Marsh) by public transport. I hope there is some good birdwatching there

Kind regards

Ian

Hi,

Yes muthurajawela you can do some birdwatching. If you like further anavilundawa is a good birding site.

Nishantha

Dear Nishantha

Thank you for this information-what birds can be seen at Mutharajwaela reserve please.

Please can you kindly if possible tell me what is location of anavilundawa.

Also I have heard of following places:

Viharamahadevi (near Negombo)

Minuwandgoda March (near colombo)

Please do you know what birds can be seen at the latter two places also and how I would get to them please

Best wishes

Ian (thanks)
