Please can anyone advise on the coming Buddhist New Year in Sri Lanka..?
I%26#39;m quite excited as have experienced this in a number of other Buddhist areas.
Eg, what is it called in Sri Lanka? Is there a greeting I could learn to say?
What day(s) will people be celebrating and what do they do?
Are there any implications for businesses being closed on certain dates? Do people go to their home towns? Is transport going to be tricky around this time?
Many thanks

Buddhist New Year
Hi! first of all let me correct you. this is not buddhist new year. this is Sinhala %26amp; Hindu new year.this year we are going to celebrate it on 13 %26amp; 14 April. from 10 April to 20 April is a very busy period for all the Sri Lankans and most of the shops and restaurants are closed. transport is also malfunctioning. but there are some government transports are operating from time to time. you can wish people this period. SUBHA ALUTH AWURUDDHAK WEWA!
this festive season you will be treated by Sri Lankans on friendly basis. the gesst house where you stay don%26#39;t charge you for this two days.(Most of the time)
wish you a happy tour!
Buddhist New Year
Thank you so much! Great info.
My apologies for getting confused.
Hi Aphro
If you are in Negombo, Sinhala %26amp; Hindu New Year will not be a big problem. In the hotel side, all the shops, restaurants are opened. There is one problem on 13th and 14th days. All the bars will be closed and shops/restaurants will not sell them.
Regards
Shehan
Ah. I posted a similar question yesterday, and have just %26#39;bumped%26#39; it.
I%26#39;m going to be in the cultural triangle and hill country from 6th to 13th, and Mirissa from 13th to 18th. Am I going to have problems with shops/restaurants/internet places being shut during any/all of those dates, and in those places?
