just checked with my mobile phone co and they dont do a good rate for calling within SL. Will I be able to buy a sim card/pay as you go type deal when I am there? Any advice on what types to get and where? Thanks!

Your phone has to be minimum dual band GSM and SIM unlocked.
You can buy a Lankan SIM card for about LKR 500. Dialog GSM has the widest coverage, but other networks are Mobitel, Tigo, Hutch and Airtel. You need a copy of your passport to buy the SIM card. Dialog GSM has an outlet at the airport (to the left when you exit the airport towards the car park), but SIM cards are widely available in every town and village.
Pay as you go can be bought as phonecards or reloads at denominations from LKR 50-1000.
