visit to unawatuna

Hi there,

Hmmm... apparently your question falls in between generic and specific. So maybe helpful if you become a bit more specific what it is you%26#39;re looking for? And how? Day trips only, or also a multi-day venture into the real inland (Hill Country, Kandy area and Cultural Triangle)?

As for day trips, the most you can do from U%26#39;tuna are:

* West coast: Galle-Bentota stretch, which has lots of interesting stuff (like fort, reef boat trip, moonstone mine, mask museum).

* %26#39;Central%26#39;: Sinharaja forest from Denaniya side and Udu Walawe park safari (both quite long days)

* South coast: Kataragama, and maybe see the Tangalle blow hole on your way if it%26#39;s the right season.

All the best,

We saw the Tangalle ';Blow'; Hole... I%26#39;ve put it in speech marks as it%26#39;s didn%26#39;t blow. We saw the hole, but didn%26#39;t get to see it blow.

I actually renamed it ';The Hole';.

We waited for 15 minutes and nothing happened.

I did buy some nice dried fish on a stick though, so all was not lost.

Some you win...

Stay at the Peacock Hotel Unawatuna, towards south end of beach. Well priced, right on beach, great atmosphere. They have website, should find easily.

You%26#39;re right, it is overhyped. There%26#39;s really only 1-2 months per year that it can be spectacular and usually is; from my memory it%26#39;s May-June. This is all caused by winds / sea currents. We have some lovely pics from an outing ';at the right time';, it really reached up 5 meters at least above the land level - like a Geyser...

Tnx,

%26lt;Erik%26gt; %26amp; [Sandya]

I was at the Blow Hole in early April last year and it was ';blowing'; nicely about every 5 minutes with some lesser ';blows'; in between.

It%26#39;s correct that it is the sea being pressured into the hole and therefore most spectacular when the sea is rough. I was told that it is most active during the whole west monsoon season.

We`ve booked in for the whole of our break at the flower garden, which we are told is extremely good so we reckon day trips are the best option as we will have to book out of our room.If we book out we may not get our room back? This may be our last holiday for some time so we really do want to see highlights, not just touristy bits. The option of a two or three day trip does sound interesting though and we could also fit in a few day trips then so where do we start.Shame to go all that way just for the beach isn`t it!

Also if we do a two or three day trip what would you recommend and who would you suggest to go with?

Okay, for a 2-3 day trip best focus on Hill Country and Kandy; Cultural Triangle would be a bit too far out.

Day 1: Hambantota-Ella-Haputale. About 6 hours drive, magnificent towards the end. Maybe time for a walk with the vistas.

Day 2: Also brief walk, visit tea plantation, then to Eliya (1 hour town walk) and Kandy. Afternoon-evening Kandy, at least Temple of Tooth and dance show. Driving only about 4 hours.

Day 3: Morning to Pinawela elephant orphanage. After that Colombo-Galle-Unawatuna. Driving 6-7 hours.

All the best,

If it makes sense to stay over somewhere for a night do so as you will have no problem getting a room anywhere just walking in and probably at a cheaper price than over the internet too.

If you want some quality beach time Mirissa is much nicer than Unawatuna and is just half an hour further south.

+Would you recommend anyone? How much should we expect to pay.Would we be expected to pay for room we are vacating for those days?

Thanks for your help
